Neuropsychology and Brain Trauma
Neuropsychology and Brain Trauma
Neuropsychology is a branch of psychology that is concerned with how the brain and the rest of the nervous system influence a person’s cognition and behaviours. More importantly, professionals in this branch of psychology often focus on how injuries or illnesses of the brain affect cognitive functions and behaviours.
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) can be a very difficult experience to navigate through. A TBI is caused when an incident causes injury to the brain. Some incidences may be physiological such as a stroke or aneurysm or from an external force, such as the result of a car accident, fall or being hit on the head, to name a few. TBIs may cause temporary and sometimes permanent impairment of cognitive, physical, and psychosocial functions, with an associated diminished or altered state of consciousness. A psychologist may assist with assessment and understanding of the individual’s current condition and help them, along with their family members, adjust to life forward with a TBI.
